Colour Blindness (Rabun Warna 色盲)

To understand how we can help, the first step is to understand what colour blindess really is.

What Is Colour Blindness Or Deficiency (Rabun Warna 色盲)? What Help Could We Offer?

Colour deficiency (Rabun Warna 色弱), also known as colour blindness (Rabun Warna 色盲), is a condition where some people have a deficiency in one or more of the primary colors (red, green, or blue) recognized through the retina (back of the eye). Colour blindness (Rabun Warna 色盲) or colour deficiency (Rabun Warna 色弱) affects over 3 million people in some form or another. Approximately 10% of males are colour deficient but only 0.6-0.8% of females are colour deficient. It is caused by a deficiency of certain chemicals in the retina of the eye.

Colour deficiencies can be grouped into the following categories:
  • Deutrans (lack in green receptors)
  • Protans (lack in red receptors)
  • Tritans (lack in blue receptors)
  • Monochromatics (sees only 1 pigment)
  • Achromatics (has no functioning cones)

Defective colour vision can range from near-normal ability to distinguish colours, where typically the chemical for seeing red or green is slightly altered, to a high degree of confusion, where the chemical balance is considerably altered. In the most severe cases, deeper colours as well as pale colours will be confused, particularly if the lighting is poor.

Our practice carries different types of product solutions for colour blind (Rabun Warna 色盲) patients, e.g. Chromagen, ColorMAX, Colorlite,Colorview etc.

These unique systems (called Colorist Systems) can be worn as either contact lenses or spectacles. For people suffering from colour deficiency (Rabun Warna 色弱) or "colour blindness" (Rabun Warna 色盲) special filters work by changing the wavelength of each colour going into one or both eyes, which enhances colour perception and colour discrimination. For many people suffering colour deficiencies, this improvement can be dramatic and life changing. Even colours that are normally correctly identified often seem brighter, richer and more vivid while other shades and colours may be perceived for the first time.

These special system lenses can realistically be expected to achieve the following:
  • Improve general colour perception
  • Make colours brighter and clearer
  • Allow shades of colour, previously unseen, to be observed
  • Improve the ability to name colours correctly (especially when assistance is provided in this area, e.g., by relatives or friends.
  • Improved colour vision may also lead to improved safety, for example through earlier identification of hazard warning lights and brake lights on the roads. Until recently there has been no effective treatment for colour deficiency and sufferers have had to make adjustments in the real world themselves (for example, distinguishing traffic lights by their position on the post rather than by the different colours).

The aim of this system for colour vision is to improve colour perception in real-world situations; however it is also very likely that scores on colour vision tests will dramatically improve. Colour vision, and colour naming in particular, will normally improve rapidly when using special lenses within the first couple of months.

With some people, however, the results are more immediate and they are able to pass tests after just a few hours of using these lenses.
